IN-HOME INFANT
CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY (CST)

  • Infant cranial sacral therapy (CST) bodywork techniques focus on the soft tissues that surround the brain and spinal cord, including the nerves. Similar to a jellyfish, the nerves attach to the skull, and need to be free to work well for the infant. The pressure applied is up to the weight of a nickel (sometimes it may even look like I’m not doing much of anything.) Very little force is needed to manipulate and relax the soft tissue.

CST does not hurt. Most of the time the baby is completely relaxed, which may help them sleep immediately after, and most sleep through the treatment.

You will be taught bodywork techniques for you to continue to work with your baby. It is possible they may need 2-3 treatments or be referred to another provider for further treatment depending on the severity.

  • What can cranial sacral do to help to breastfeed?

    • Relax the baby’s jaw, so the tongue can move more freely and open their mouth more widely and comfortably

    • Reduce tension in the baby’s neck due to their position in utero or their position during birth (asynclitic head, breech, vacuum, long-stage of pushing, etc.)

    • Relieves tightness in the baby’s neck and jaw, which may cause them to prefer one side over the other, pinch the nipple, or have a sensitive gag reflex

    • Relieve tension inside the baby’s mouth which may cause suction that is strong, painful, off-center or a suck that is too weak and therefore is not efficient

    • Help remediate acid reflux

CST can also help relieve torticollis and plagiocephaly.
